The D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival was first conceived as an annual for-profit music and arts showcase taking advantage of the unique Dumbo neighborhood and its high concentration of artist studios. The inaugural event was produced in 1997 by Joy Glidden and Tyson Daugherty, two Dumbo residents. Glidden, a painter, organized visual artists and Daugherty managed the live music. Another local artist, Rodney Trice, did graphic design for the promotional materials. After the success of '97 Festival, which featured open studios, live performances, and an art parade through the streets of Dumbo, Glidden, Daugherty, and Trice decided to use the Festival’s momentum to form a loose coalition of artists that would become the Dumbo Arts Center. From '97 to 2009, the Festival evolved and changed. Live performance was soon eclipsed by visual arts, and eventually eliminated altogether. Street art and site-specific work became more prominent as the number of artist studios decreased. In 2010, Two Trees Management and Dalzell Productions took charge of the neighborhood event, renaming it the Dumbo Arts Festival. DAC continues to contribute to the curatorial vision of the Festival though we no longer control programming. DAC also continues to present video_dumbo, a festival-within-a-festival of new contemporary video art. For more information on the new festival, please visit the Dumbo Arts Festival website.
